Mile-a-Minute Vine - Management

Please email ipcnys@tnc.org and describe management methods you recommend (or do not recommend). And thank you for taking time to share your experiences...

Kathy Schwagger, LIWMA, Recommendations: M-a-M should be pulled before it sets seed and we usually pull it at our sites twice during the growing season: once early and then again late in the season as it will continue to sprout all summer. The seed bank will take about 5 years to exhaust itself as long as the plants are removed before seed set. Definitely wear long pants and gloves. It can give you some nasty scratches. It's easy to pull out. Our volunteers love it. It's a pretty fragile plant for all its invasiveness and the plants come right up as the roots are shallow. Treated sites should be monitored for at least 5 years. The removed plant material should be bagged and ideally left to bake for a few weeks, but it can also be just sent off to the landfill.

Beth Herr, at Ward Pound Ridge: is planning to try an organic product, Burn Out on mile-a-minute this summer.
